Hurricane Harvey Update

By | News

The LEX weathered Hurricane Harvey just fine, we have no damage beyond basic cleanup. However, we are still without power and cannot reopen until power is restored. At that time, we will need a day to bring the aircraft back up to the flight deck and put all in order for our visitors. We will be back open soon!

Memorial Day 2017 – Honoring Heroes Aboard Lexington

By | News

Corpus Christi – In honor and remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country there will be a Commemoration and Wreath Laying Ceremony aboard Lexington on Memorial Day.

We are honored to have Congressman Blake Farenthold as our guest speaker. On the House Floor on May 24th Congressman Farenthold recognized the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea and acknowledged the heroism of Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Junior Grade William E. Hall. He will present a plaque to Lexington and LT Hall’s daughter, Gwen Hall with the transcript of his speech.

7-8 May 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea – Lieutenant Junior Grade William E. Hall was aboard USS Lexington CV-2 serving as a scout plane pilot with Scouting Squadron 2 flying the SBD Dauntless. On 7 May over the Coral Sea he dive bombed a Japanese aircraft carrier, contributing greatly to its destruction. The next day, he attacked a superior number of Japanese planes and shot down three. Although his aircraft was damaged and he was seriously wounded in this attack, he managed to land safely. For these actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor that is currently on display aboard Lexington.

The SBD Dauntless located at the entrance to USS Lexington has been renovated in the paint scheme of Squadron 2 in honor of all pilots that flew this dive bomber during World War II.

Immediately following the ceremony Boy Scout Troop 6 from Brownsville, Texas will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on the Flight Deck. The public is invited to bring flags for this special ceremony.

World War II Veteran and former Lexington Bomber Group 20 crew member LCDR Henry Rubner will be welcomed back aboard on Monday, December 5th at 1000.  While here, Henry Rubner-or “Hank” as he insists to be called, will sit down and share stories from years ago when he served as a bomber pilot with the US Navy. Rubner scored his first major combat success after flying off the aircraft carrier USS Lexington on Jan. 3, 1945. Dropping bombs onto a Japanese cargo vessel bound for the island of Formosa (now Taiwan), the pilot received his first of two air medals. During his career he was also awarded the Silver Star.

Not only did “Hank” serve our country, but his older brother “Charles” was a Pearl Harbor Survivor and Navy Veteran.  With the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack approaching on December 7th, we especially welcome the opportunity to have LCDR Rubner back aboard his ship to visit once more, while reminding us of all those who serve and have served.

Corpus Christi – The USS Lexington Museum will hold a Remembrance Ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 7 December 2016, to commemorate the 75thanniversary of the 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The ceremony, which will honor those who died in the attack as well as local survivors, will feature the Corpus Christi Veterans Band, Mary Carroll High School NJROTC members, and the Corpus Christi Fire Department Pipes & Drums. In Navy tradition a wreath will be laid in the water followed by taps. Local Pearl Harbor Survivors including Lexington Volunteer Bob Batterson accepted invitations from Honor Flights and American Airlines and are currently participating in the events scheduled in Hawaii.

The ceremony is sponsored by the USS Lexington Volunteer Organization and will be hosted by Captain F. W. “Rocco” Montesano, USN (Ret), Executive Director, USS Lexington Museum on the Bay.

Admission for this event is complimentary.
