16 February 2018 – 25th Annual Stage Door Canteen

By | News

USS LEXINGTON Museum On the Bay Board President Pat Veteto has announced plans for the 25th Annual Stage Door Canteen to be held aboard the USS LEXINGTON Museum on Friday, 16 February 2018, at 7:00 PM. The upcoming event will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the commissioning of USS LEXINGTON (CV-16).

Steve Banta, Museum Executive Director, said this year’s show will recreate the Canteen shows from WWII when famous entertainers traveled the world performing for service men and women far from home.  Headlining the star-studded cast will be the USS LEXINGTON Big Band Orchestra. Celebrated vocal artists Jason Armstrong, Flicka Rahn, Carla Gardiner, and Victoria Majors will perform songs of the era. Scott Plant, a recipient of the Texas CMA Hall of Fame Award, will entertain you with his fiddle!   Described as a magical evening of nostalgia, the show has been a complete sell-out for the last twenty-four years.

Tickets are $60 per couple, $35 single for open seating.  Reserved tables of ten are available for either $400 or $500. The higher priced tables are closer to the dance floor.  Advance ticket purchase is required – tickets will not be sold at the door.

Ticket funds are used for continued restoration and maintenance of the USS LEXINGTON Museum. Dinner is not served at this event. Light snacks and a cash bar will be available. For reservations or more information, call 361-888-4873 ext 307 or 800-523-9539 ext 307.

The LEX weathered Hurricane Harvey just fine, we have no damage beyond basic cleanup. However, we are still without power and cannot reopen until power is restored. At that time, we will need a day to bring the aircraft back up to the flight deck and put all in order for our visitors. We will be back open soon!

Memorial Day 2017 – Honoring Heroes Aboard Lexington

By | News

Corpus Christi – In honor and remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country there will be a Commemoration and Wreath Laying Ceremony aboard Lexington on Memorial Day.

We are honored to have Congressman Blake Farenthold as our guest speaker. On the House Floor on May 24th Congressman Farenthold recognized the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea and acknowledged the heroism of Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Junior Grade William E. Hall. He will present a plaque to Lexington and LT Hall’s daughter, Gwen Hall with the transcript of his speech.

7-8 May 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea – Lieutenant Junior Grade William E. Hall was aboard USS Lexington CV-2 serving as a scout plane pilot with Scouting Squadron 2 flying the SBD Dauntless. On 7 May over the Coral Sea he dive bombed a Japanese aircraft carrier, contributing greatly to its destruction. The next day, he attacked a superior number of Japanese planes and shot down three. Although his aircraft was damaged and he was seriously wounded in this attack, he managed to land safely. For these actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor that is currently on display aboard Lexington.

The SBD Dauntless located at the entrance to USS Lexington has been renovated in the paint scheme of Squadron 2 in honor of all pilots that flew this dive bomber during World War II.

Immediately following the ceremony Boy Scout Troop 6 from Brownsville, Texas will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on the Flight Deck. The public is invited to bring flags for this special ceremony.
