CORPUS CHRISTI – The USS Lexington Museum will hold a memorial ceremony on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024, at 1:00PM commemorating the 80th anniversary of the kamikaze attack that occurred on November 5th, 1944, to pay tribute to the victims of the attack. The ceremony will be hosted by the Volunteers of the USS Lexington Museum.
On November 5th, 1944, Japanese aircraft intercepted USS Lexington (CV-16), resulting in a kamikaze pilot striking the starboard aft end of the island. The aircraft carried an unreleased 500 lb. bomb that tore through the ship’s island. A massive blaze ensued, that the crew heroically brought under control within minutes. This attack would be the worst casualty event recorded in the ship’s over 40 years of active service.
The memorial ceremony will recount details of the attack, including reading of witness accounts and reciting names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving aboard USS Lexington (CV-16) that day. At 1:37PM, the time of the kamikaze attack, a wreath-laying will take place to conclude the ceremony.
