The USS LEXINGTON Museum currently has three McDonnell-Douglas A-4 Skyhawks on exhibit - two A-4Bs and one TA-4J.
The A-4 Skyhawk entered service in 1956 and was originally designed as a low-cost "expendable" nuclear weapons delivery platform. It later became the primary conventional ordnance light attack aircraft.
By 1968, 30 Navy and Marine squadrons were equipped with the Skyhawk. The aircraft was nicknamed "The Scooter" by carrier-based pilots because of its nimble performance.
The Blue Angels flew the Skyhawk for 12 years, from 1974 to 1986.
