The first T-34s purchased by the Navy were T-34Bs like the one shown here on the USS Lexington. They were piston-powered with modest performance.
In the early 1970s, the B models were phased out in favor of the more powerful turboprop C version that is currently the mainstay of the Navy and Marine Corps primary flight training.
Lexington's T-34B was used by the Navy until recently for recruitment purposes. A number of T-34s were assigned to the Recruiting Command to give prospective aviation officer candidates a taste of flight.
